The Newcastle Knights led 30-6 at half-time, got the staggers and allowed the Cowboys to get back within two converted tries , BUT held on to defeat the injury-ravaged Cowboys 36-18.
The first half, was the nightmare that coach Neil Henry must have been dreading, as the Knights scored in the 4th, 7th, 12th, 20th, before the Cowboys finally got on the board in the 25th minute. The game was "all over" then at 22-6, and the Knights seemingly put it beyond doubt to lead 30-6 at the break.
The second half was all Cowboys as they put on two tries to scare the Knights. However ultimately, the rudderless Cowboys squandered their chances and the blew the pressure that they had the Knights under. The Knights finally scored a second half try in the 77th minute, to put the game beyond doubt.
The Knights deserved their win but it is their continued wobbles in the second half that must concern coach Rick Stone, the former Burleigh Bears mentor. The Cowboys showed some spirit in the second half, but their first half display was woeful and not deserving of first grade standard.
